The Big Apple
will seem somewhat like home to our reporter who is quite familiar with the city that never sleeps. Already with several great cities behind her, Florence will be able to enjoy Central Park in the springtime, walking along the 5th and Madison avenues and sharing her favourite places
with you.
The Sofitell New York
is located in the heart of Manhattan. A stone’s throw away from Broadway or 5th Avenue
, it will be impossible to resist the urge to shop!
During her stay in New York, Florence was lucky enough to meet George Clooney, who unfortunately wasn’t much help with shopping ideas but did invite her for a coffee…We love George!
It took me the whole of the morning to pack my luggage, throw away anything that I no longer needed and finally SAT on my suitcase to close it…
Then off I went to the airport, sat in my cab, window down and hair blowing in the wind, bye bye New York… oh New York!
I went to business class to check in for American Airlines, arriving smiling but my face dropped when they said “that is just not possible, too much luggage”…what? I reply. Well, ok, I have an enormous suitcase and three lots of hand luggage. Don’t worry, I will go an buy another suitcase! (I can have two suitcases as I am in business class). One problem, they don’t sell suitcases here… “Holy Sh…” So I ask them to help me find a solution and tell me “M’am, we can’t do anything for you”. “What?” I say again. Read more
West Village is one of my favourite places in Manhattan, which is just a little further down than the famous Time Square! On Bleeker Street all you find is shops, shops and more shops! So you can imagine I was very happy!
Marc Jacobs has his headquarters there. Here you find Marc by Marc Jacobs where there is line of accessories signed by the famous stylist which are actually quite affordable and Little Marc Jacobs (at number 382, see photo) on the same road which is for children. There is also Ralph Lauren, some smaller designers, some cheaper shops and even a delicious bakery, where you can taste or gobble up the famous cupcakes and fresh melt in the mouth chocolate cheesecakes or refreshing lemon cheesecakes, perfect for a summer’s day. It is a shop to remember as it is without doubt the best in the area… maybe even the best in Manhattan? (I think I have decided; next best job: to discover the best pastries and culinary specialities…)
Now I am a great fan of the 70s, it is here that I discovered a new, very hippy, style, even though I was not born until 10 years later…but even in LA , the hippies greeted me with “sista” with a “peace” sign as an indication of recognition between “brothers”! Yeah man!
Brooklyn has the same kind of underground atmosphere that I felt in Berlin and London: an artistic ambiance and a quieter more calm vibe than Manhattan, the energy that you feel here is simply not the same… but I still love both places! Here it is less busy, there are less tourists. All in all a more peaceful life for those who like that kind of thing!
If you have ever dreamt of playing Carrie Bradshaw in NYC and wearing the famous “Flower Dress” then Patricia Field’s shop is the place for you. She is the stylist to thank for all the amazing clothes in the series (and also for some other famous films like “The Devil Wears Prada” and “Ugly Betty”).
As a reporter shopping here in NYC, I just HAD to tell you about this shop, here you can find anything from leopard print leggings, a “I’ll kick your ass” hat and everything perfect for creating your new look!
I have really enjoyed walking around this cool hippie area, discovering the cool little shops instead of walking along the commercial streets of Soho, which are a lot more touristy and only two steps away from here.
Nolita and East Village are two areas in the south east of Manhattan, right next to each other so very easy to walk between. It was very trendy, some years ago, to live in East Village, but today other neighbourhoods have become “the most fashionable places to live”.
I’m looking forward to discovering the Big Apple, its giant avenues, Broadway and its musicals, its unusual and offbeat places, its inhabitants and their crazy styles and thousands of taxis available even on a Saturday night! Come rain or shine, I think it is going to be amazing!
Florence will be in New York between the 16th and 20th March. So take part in the Second Best Job in the World by sharing your shopping suggestions via this blog!
